Jacob Neumann. Døbt paa Strømsø 20. 7. 1772 (fødselsdagen vidste han ikke selv), død i Bergen 25. 1. 1848. Da hans mor døde. blev han optaget i sin morfaders, kjøb-mand Gustavus Bloms, hus i Holmsbo. Denne døde imidlertid snart (1776), og hans enke (hans 2den hustru) Anne Christiane Krefting (før gift med kaptein Vogelius) giftede sig igjen (for 3die gang) med Fredrik Wilhelm Krog, kommandør og søin-ruleringschef. I dette rige hus i Kristiania tilbragte altsaa Jacob Neumann sin barndom og nød en meget omhyggelig undervisning (ved en student Møller). 1781 blev han elev af det dengang anseede Kølleske institut paa Snarøen ved Kristiania, hvor han var i 3 à 4 aar.

Derefter blev han sendt til Helsingør skole, hvorfra han blev dimitteret til universitetet 1787. Han levede derpaa nogle aar i Kjøbenhavn, hvor han fik plads paa Regensen, og lagde sig særlig efter levende sprog og æstetik, men begyndte dog ogsaa saa smaat med theologien. Siden blev han huslærer hos ritmester Fischer paa herregaarden Kvistrup ved Limfjorden. 1796 blev han cand. theol, med laudabilis. 1798 vandt han prisen for universitetets theologiske prisspørgsmaal: «Om Daaben og dette Dogmes Historie i de 3 første Aarhundreder». 1797 blev han hovmester for den rige geheimekonferentsraad Johan Christian Constantin Bruuns børn i Kjøbenhavn. 1799 tog han den filosofiske doktorgrad for en afhandling: «De primatu lundensi».

Samme aar blev han residerende kapellan til Asker, 1805 sogneprest sammesteds, 1811 R.D.O., 1814 medlem af dette aars overordentlige storting og blev for-mand for hyldningsdeputationen til Stockholm, ved hvilken leilighed han blev R N.O.; 1819 blev han provst i Drammens provsti, 1822 biskop i Bergens stift efter Pavels, 1826 K. (storkors) N.O. — Biskop Neumann var en meget yderliggaaende rationalist; dog blev han paa sine gamle dage endel paavirket af Mynster. Hans katekismus-udgave af 1813 kan maaske betegnes som rationalismens sidste betydelige livsytring i Norge og Danmark, men betegner tillige et vendepunkt, da den vakte autoriteterne til eftertanke og ikke blev approberet. Han var levende interesseret i historisk granskning, paa hvilket omraade han leverede meget, der har blivende værd, særlig i det bergenske tidsskrift «Urda». Tillige kom der fra hans pen ikke lidet af personalhistorisk indhold, der har megen interesse. Han har saaledes leveret vigtige bidrag til Bergens historie i sin tid. Som prest blev han en ivrig jorddyrker og holdt i Asker fore-læsninger for bønderne over jordbrugslære. Hans fortjenester i den hen-seende er utvilsomme. Han var medlem af «Det kungliga Samfundet till Utgifning af Handskrifter rørande Scandinaviens Historia».

Som biskop optraadte Neumann altid med stor værdighed og fornemhed, der undertiden grænsede til latterlighed. Han var dog i det hele vel likt af sine prester, og hans overlegenhed og begavelse erkjendtes selv af de frem¬ragende. Han var meget interesseret i skolesager og forsøgte i Bergen at indføre reformer paa dette omraade, men var her ikke synderlig heldig. Paa ét punkt har han indlagt sig store fortjenester; han fik presternes arkiver iorden. Hans formænd Brun og Pavels havde ikke havt øie for disse ting og det var almindeligt, at embedsskrivelser straks brugtes som makulatur, ligesom ministerialbøger paa sine steder i flere aar ikke var førte.

Paa dette uvæsen gjorde Neumann en brat ende. Mange gjorde modstand og syntes, han var urimelig, men der kom orden i papirerne. Ved Grundlæggelsen af Bergens museum var medhjælper og han har store fortjenester af denne insl.. Trods sin høitidelige værdighed var Neumann af naturen selskapelig og humoristisk anlagt. «Ingen pedantisk fiende af bordets opmuntrenrende glæder;. og han fordrev gjerne et par aftentimer ved l'hombre-bordet», siger Schwach i sin biografi af ham. G. i Kjøbenhavn (St. Peters kirke) 1. 2. 1800 med Justine Marie Agnete Briåin, født i Gilstrow i Mecklenburg 20. 6. 1780, død i Bergen 16. 12. 1838 (dtr. af Wilhelm Carl August Bruun, apoteker i Gustrow og broder af ovennævnte geheimekonferentsraad I.C.C. Bruun, og hustru Catharine Caroline Christine Meese). 9 børn.
